We are looking for like-minded researchers from any fitting discipline to carry an ambitious and comprehensive research in digital transformation of university. We are looking forward to fruitful cooperation in research and publication. We are willing to include other, yet fitting strands of research on digital transformation of universities, into the proposal.

  • Brief description of your project / the project you would like to join:

Digital transformation of universities The aim of this interdisciplinary project is to investigate digital transformation of universities treated as a specific type of organizations. Digital transformation of society and economy involves digitalization of education, growing competition from other educational entities (i.e. platformization of education, and, above all, changes in the labour market in the digital economy (diminishing pool of well-paid employment for workers with higher education, accent on digital ). These changes require systemic overhaul of the modes of provision of the four main university services (teaching and research, administration, public mission). We want to address the issue of digital transformation of universities along several axes: 1) How do universities approach the process of technology adoption and roll-out? How do they use the best practices and knowledge-exchange? Is there a strategy of digital transformation? 2) To what extent they depend on technological solutions provided by external providers; is there any technological lock-in observed? 3) What are the expectations towards the results of digital transformation among the university authorities, administration, academic staff and students? 4) How is the process of digital transformation carried through? Particularly, is it centralized or decentralized? To what extent is it participatory? What are the steps taken in digitalization of the processes? 5) What are the organizational barriers to digital transformation? How are they coped with? 6) How is the approach to the work performed by administration and academic staff changing when the organization embarks on digital transformation? 7) How digital transformation changes the provision of the main university services and functions? We would like to invite researchers – sociologists, economists, anthropologists, organization studies researchers - from other European universities to carry a comparative study of digital transformation of universities. The project will aim at building a comprehensive digital maturity index. Basing on the knowledge we have gathered while building similar index for industry (based on three pillars: technology, organization and processes) we want to apply it to the higher education organizations. We will take into account the Covid-19-induced changes, but we\'d like to focus on the longer time span to provide a wider context of organizational transformations.
