  • Faculty of Biology

Professor at the Department of Invertebrate Evolution, Jagiellonian University. Received a MSc (2004) and DSc (2017) from the Jagiellonian University. Earned a PhD (2009) from the University of East Anglia (United Kingdom), where he also completed a three-year postdoctoral fellowship. A winning applicant of NCN grant programmes (OPUS, SONATA BIS, MAESTRO), FNP (Homing Plus), and MNiSW (Iuventus Plus). Recipient of scholarships from the MNiSW (Scholarship for Outstanding Students and for Outstanding Young Scientists), the Australian Group of Eight (University of Western Australia), and the Gibson-Sykora Trust (University of St Andrews, United Kingdom).

Research interests focus on understanding the mechanisms of the evolution of life, in particular the formation of Earth’s diversity. Primarily interested in the role of genetic recombination and the role of sexual selection in the persistence of evolutionary lineages and generation of species diversity. Other interests include the description of biodiversity and understanding its changes across time and space. Uses various groups of invertebrates as research models, with the main focus on the analysis of water bears (Tardigrada) using taxonomy tools. Published his research results in over 170 articles cited in JCR-indexed journals, including Nature and Science. Supervised five completed PhD dissertations and over a dozen MSc and BSc theses.

Member (2013-2015) and Vice-Chair (2015-2017) of the Council of Young Scientists at the Ministry of Higher Education and Science (MNiSW), member of the Committee for the Evaluation of Polish Scientific Institutions (2017-2020), member of the MNiSW Expert Panel for Scholarships for Students and Young Scientists (2020-2021), and member of the Committee on Environmental and Evolutionary Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (2017-2020). Chairman of the International Organizing Committee of the 15th International Symposium on Tardigrada (Kraków, 2022). Associate Editor of several journals, including the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society. Former member and Chair of NCN Expert Panels in Life Sciences (2018-2020) and current Chair of the Life Sciences Committee.
