The JPIAMR network has announced the results of the 16th international call for proposals on antimicrobial resistance. Winners include four projects that involve Polish teams, who will receive over PLN 4.2 million in funding from the NCN.

The main goal of this year’s call, Development of innovative strategies, tools, technologies and methods for diagnostics and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance, was to foster the development of new or improvement of existing strategies, tools, technologies, and methods to support the prudent and rational antimicrobial use (AMU). Scientists participating in the call will all work toward that goal, focusing on the detection of resistant microorganisms, diagnosis of resistant infections, and/or collecting, analysing and using data on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial use (AMU).

The DISTOMOS call was open to researchers affiliated with Polish institutions, planning international research projects in tandem with partners from 19 different countries. The call was answered by 106 international consortia, out of which 17 were awarded funding; 4 of these involve Polish researchers. The NCN call budget came up to more than PLN 4.2 million.

  • AEROBIOMICS-AMR – Aerobiome-based genomic analysis of fungicide resistance for tracking the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance in plant and environmental pathogens

The Polish PI is Prof. Dr hab. inż. Tomasz Kulik from the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. The budget of the project is more than PLN 730 thousand.

  • BALTIC-AMR – “One Health” approach to the uniformised monitoring of antibiotic residues, antimicrobial resistance genes and resistance to heavy metals in the Baltic marine environment and wild bird populations

The Polish PI is Dr Ewa Kotlarska from the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Sopot. The budget of the project is more than PLN 1.2 million.

  • DDBIOS – Droplet Digital PCR and PCR-free BIOSensors for the diagnosis of resistance-associated SNPs in Pneumocystis jirovecii

The Polish PI and coordinator of the international consortium is Dr hab. Marta Kicia from the Medical University of Wrocław. The project was awarded a grant of nearly PLN 2 million.

  • MARRES – “One Health” approach to the health monitoring of antimicrobial resistance in the marine mammals, marine environment and human populations of the North Sea and Baltic Sea region

The Polish PI is Dr Iwona Pawliczka vel Pawlik from the University of Gdańsk. The budget of the project is more than PLN 320 thousand.

NCN in the JPIAMR network

The National Science Centre has cooperated with the JPIAMR network since 2015, helping in the organisation of international calls for research proposals in the field of antimicrobial resistance in alignment with the “One Health” approach. Thus far, Polish researchers have been able to compete in 7 JPIAMR calls, in which they have won 15 grants, worth more than PLN 17.3 million in total.
