The Austrian Science Fund (FWF), established in 1967, is Austria's central funding organization for basic research. The purpose of the FWF is to support the ongoing development of Austrian science and basic research at a high international level. In this way, the FWF makes a significant contribution to cultural development, to the advancement of the knowledge-based society, and thus to the creation of value and wealth in Austria.
On 5 of April 2018, in Prague, Prof. Zbigniew Błocki, NCN Director and Prof. Klement Tockner, FWF President, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions. This bilateral agreement laid the cornerstone of work on a future joint funding opportunity for Polish-Austrian research teams. In spring 2019, a new MOZART call for proposals was launched in the area of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences and Engineering.
On 17 June 2019, the directors of the agencies associated in the Central European Science Partnership (CEUS) initiative signed an agreement on a grant competition that will allow financing joint bilateral or multilateral research projects carried out by researchers from Poland, Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovenia.
The NCN has cooperated with the FWF under the Weave programme since 2021.
