Dr hab. inż. Alicja Kazek-Kęsik

Professor at the Silesian University of Technology.

She completed her master's studies in 2011 at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice. During her master’s studies, she participated in an international exchange programme and studied at the University of Southern Denmark in Denmark. In July 2015, she defended her doctoral thesis in chemical technology, which was recognised by the Faculty of Chemistry Council at the Silesian University of Technology and awarded by the Polish Electroplating Society and the Institute of Precision Mechanics in Warsaw (the T. Żak Award, 2016). In March 2022, she was conferred the degree of habilitated doctor in engineering and technical sciences by the Discipline Council for Chemical Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology.

Prof. Alicja Kazek-Kęsik was the principal investigator of the PRELUDIUM and SONATA grants funded by the National Science Centre (NCN) and TANGO co-funded by the NCN and the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR). She is currently the principal investigator of the “Leader” project funded by the NCBR. She was the main performer in projects such as Iuventus Plus, SONATA and coordinator of the “Innovation Incubator +” project.

In 2013- 2015, she was the grantee of a project entitled: “Scholarship and internship fund for the development of knowledge transfer in the region” implemented by the “Technopark Gliwice” Science and Technology Park. In June 2020, she was awarded a 3-year scholarship for outstanding early-stage researchers by the Minister of Science and Higher Education.

She is experienced in the implementation and evaluation of European projects. She has been an expert of proposals for the Research Executive Agency on three occasions for Horizon 2020, Marie Curie Individual Fellowship and Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship.
During her research work, she has participated in several national and international fellowships, including at Université Grenoble Alpes, Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) Grenoble in France. Her research interests include metal surface modification, layer fabrication, physico-chemical surface analysis, biological and microbiological analysis. Through extensive cooperation with national and international centres, she is constantly developing her research skills.

She has co-authored 77 scientific publications in JCR-indexed journals and her Hirsch index is 23 (as of the beginning of 2025).

Dr hab. inż. Alicja Kazek-Kęsik is co-author of 14 national patents, 2 national patent applications and 4 European patent applications. One licence of a patent she co-authored was sold to industry in 2018.
She has actively participated in many leading national and international conferences presenting the findings of her work, including at the invitation of conference organisers such as the Canadian Biomaterial Congress (Quebec, Canada).

She has extensive teaching experience: between 2015 and 2022, she supervised 14 master's theses, 12 engineering projects and served as an associate supervisor for one doctoral thesis. She is currently the associate supervisor of a further PhD on surface modification of metallic materials.

She was a member of the Council of Young Scientists of the Minister of Education and Science from 2021 to 2022.
