The European Research Council (ERC) is an organisation supporting excellent research within Europe. Its priority is the promotion of interdisciplinary research that reaches beyond existing levels of knowledge. With its headquarters in Brussels the agency annually invites funding applications from emerging researchers – Starting Grants and Consolidator Grants and experienced researchers – Advanced Grants.
The ERC funding portfolio includes also the Synergy Grants which are intended to enable a small group of Principal Investigators and their teams to bring together complementary skills, knowledge, and resources in new ways, in order to jointly address research problems. In 2011 the ERC launched Proof of Concept in order to support the ERC grantees who want to establish the innovation potential of ideas arising from their ERC-funded frontier research.
