Head of the Department of Pathophysiology at the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, medical doctor and scientist. Graduate of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice (Faculty of Medicine in Katowice, 1991). Specialist in internal diseases (1999), nephrology (2003), angiology (2003), hypertensiology (2006) and clinical transplantology (2007). Co-creator of the kidney and pancreas transplant program in Upper Silesia. He studied (1991-2009) at the Clinic of Nephrology, Endocrinology, and Metabolic Diseases (later converted into the Clinic of Nephrology, Transplantology and Internal Diseases). From 2014 onward, he has worked at the Unit of Internal Disease and Oncological Chemotherapy. He is the author and co-author of more than 420 publications, including 150 in international journals, cited more than 1600 times, with a Hirsch index of 22.
His main scientific achievements include: detection of lowered concentrations of adiponectin and renalase in patients with primary hypertension, description of the frequency of drug-resistant hypertension in the population of patients with abdominal obesity, somatic chromosomal aberrations in secondary parathyroid gland hyperplasia caused by chronic renal insufficiency and neurocellular kidney tumours, description of the frequency of kidney artery stenosis in the world's largest group of patients with hypertension, a randomized trial of the efficacy of brachytherapy combined with the angioplasty of kidney arteries, description of the prognostic value of the renal blood flow spectrum in the first post-transplantation phase, description of the spectrum of chronic kidney disease in the population of seniors (the PolSenior survey), identification of known as well as new mutations of the extracellular calcium receptor gene (hypocalciuric hypercalcemia), the menin gene (the MEN-1 syndrome), and LMX1B (the nail-patella syndrome).
Thesis advisor for seven successful doctoral dissertations. Principal investigator of more than 30 research projects, including those funded by the National Science Centre. Member of the Polish Society of Nephrology (member of the board), Polish Society for the Study of Obesity (treasurer), and ERA-EDTA. Member of the Bioethical Committee of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice. President of the University Committee for Teaching Quality.
