Andrzej L. Sobolewski graduated from the University of Warsaw (1977). He is employed as a professor in the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, where he was promoted to PhD (1981) and received his habilitation (1989). In the period 1985-1987 he was a post-doc at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) under the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship. As a guest professor he visited (1990-2014) TUM many times, and in 1994 was at the University of Arizona. In 1998-1999 he spent one year as Mercator Professor at the University of Dusseldorf. He was a member of the International Advisory Editorial Board (2006-2013) of Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics. Since 2003 he has been a member of the COST Action “Radiation Damage in Biomolecular Systems.”

His research interests concern properties of electronically excited states in molecules and molecular systems investigated with the aid of ab initio methods of quantum mechanics. Among his main achievements in this field he has discovered molecular mechanisms responsible for the photostability of basic structures of living matter and has proposed utilisation of the phenomenon for construction of molecular switches and systems for photocatalytic splitting of water. He has co-authored more than 150 original papers published in journals from the ISI Master Journal List, which are cited more than 6,000 times. He has given more than 70 invited lectures at international meetings and has headed many national and international research grants.

His awards and prizes include: the prize of the Polish Science Foundation (2007), the Polish-German Copernicus Award (2008), the Smoluchowski-Warburg Medal (2009), and the Officer Cross of Polonia Restituta Order (2013). Since 2009 he has been a member of Societas Scientarium Varsoviensis and since 2013 a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
