The founder of Polish bioinorganic chemistry, currently working at the interface between chemistry and biology. At the Department of Chemistry, University of Wroclaw, he created one of the most dynamic research teams – the Bioinorganic and Biomedical Chemistry group.

The list of his honors and awards include: Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, Membership of the Polish Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, an honorary doctorate from the Taras Shevchenko University in Kiev, three awards from the Scientific Secretary of the Polish Academy of Sciences, an award from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemical Sciences, Polish Science Award of the Year, four Awards from the Minister of Polish Science, seven awards from the Minister of National Education, the Knight's Cross from the Order of Polish Rebirth, the Medal of the Committee of Education and the prestigious Mary Curie National Science Award in Chemistry.

Chairman of the Committee of COST Action D8 "Chemistry of Metals in Medicine", coordinator of COST Action D8 "Molecular Mechanisms of Metal-Induced Toxicity and Carcinogenicity" (1998-2001), Polish delegate to the Management Committee of COST Action D20 "Metal Compounds in the Treatment of Cancer and Viral Diseases MCCV " and of COST Action D34 "Molecular Targeting and Drug Design in Neurological and Bacterial Diseases" and several others (D39, "Metallo-Drug Design and Action"), currently in the Management Committee COST CM1003 ("Biological Oxidation Reactions, Mechanisms and Design of New Catalysts"). He was a member of the editorial committees of Dalton Transaction, the New Journal of Chemistry, Inorganic Chimica Acta, Metal Based Drugs, Bioinorganic Chemistry and Applications, the Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry, the Journal of Biological Inorganic Chemistry; currently, he is on the committee of the New Journal of Chemistry.

Visiting Professor at the Universities of Strasbourg, Siena, Ferrara, Florence, Sassari, Cagliari, Lille, Dunkierque, Toulouse and Paris. He has supervised 26 PhDs. Scientific achievements: Hirsch index of 39, over 500 original papers, 15 book chapters, over 500 conference speeches and over 350 invited lectures given at international and national conferences and at various universities. Cited over 7000 times.
